About James Rushbrooke

The History of Me

I was born in the South West of England at some point in the terrifyingly distant past. A voracious reader from childhood, I had a brain teeming with thoughts and found peace and solitude within the magical worlds created by authors. It was there I fell in love with language and the simple, profound idea that you can use squiggles of ink to paint pictures in the minds of other human beings.

I went on to earn a BSc in Psychology and Drama—a feat I sometimes attribute to sheer enthusiasm—and embarked on a twin career in social work and extra-curricular drama teaching.

It was in the classroom that I began to write, penning scripts for my students. As every drama teacher knows, you need a play with 45 individual parts where every child gets a line. Rather than searching endlessly for one, I simply wrote them.

In 2012, I moved to London, and in 2013 and was accepted as a writer on attachment for the Old Vic Community Company. This led to my first play for adults, Tomcat, which won the Papatango New Writing Prize and has since been staged nationally and internationally. The play was subsequently optioned for television, which launched me enthusiastically into the world of TV drama—a world filled with exciting meetings, bitter coffee, and the occasional disappointment.

After lockdown, I felt the pull back to theatre, seeking the energy of the rehearsal room and the joy of collaborating with other creatives. I'm still there, currently on attachment to the Criterion Theatre New Writing scheme and penning pantomimes/youth productions for Questors Theatre, where I am also on the board of trustees.

I began writing Pantomimes for the Questors Theatre in 2023 and haven't looked back. I write subversive modern pantomimes as well as more traditional scripts.
