In the not-too-distant future, the world is better than ever. Diseases and disorders have been wiped out. But Jess doesn't belong. She slipped through the net and there's something dangerous in her DNA, something that must be 'cured'. Charlie is watching her and he'll do whatever it takes to keep society safe.
How The Play Came To Be...
My first play for adults
After ten years of writing plays for children in my classes, I finally wrote my first play for adults. It was terrible.
Tomcat started out as a thriller called Fingers Crossed, about a teenage psychopath who manipulates her psychiatrist and kills his newborn child. A rehearsed reading at the White Bear quickly proved it didn't work. So I rewrote it immediately. Draft three went into the Papatango Prize with zero expectations. It won. I still have no idea why. The script had good dialogue but was a complete mess. Papatango saw something compelling in it and so under the guidance of director Kate Hewitt and producers George Turvey and Chris Foxon, I did ten more drafts.
By the time the show opened at the Southwark Playhouse, starring Ellie Worthington Cox as Jessie, I was exhausted. But what I learned about writing in that short window jumped my career forward by at least a decade.
