Cinderella (2025)

Synopsis

A riotous, time-warped pantomime where fairy tales collide with 1980s pop culture, laundry woes, and a quest that spans the multiverse. This is Cinderella reinvented for anyone who grew up with mix tapes, shell suits, and cinematic blockbusters.

It’s a story about true love, and not just the romantic kind, but the love between siblings, between a father and daughter, the love of finding where you truly belong. Packed with iconic 80s song parodies, relentless puns, and classic panto audience participation, this script is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that delivers laughs, heart, and a heavy dose of retro magic.

Washed-up in a neon-lit laundrette in the strange kingdom of Eternia, Cinderella (Cyndi) dreams of a life beyond soap suds and stubborn stains. Her world is turned upside down when a mystery man tumbles out of her washing machine. When Prince Adam decides he's going to hold a royal ball to find a wife, Cyndi sees a chance to save her father's laundrette and Buttons sees his chance to climb Nakatomi Tower to rescue his sister from the villainous Hans Gruber and his nefarious Krugers.

Will Cyndi find true love in unexpected places or will her evil landlady, the monstrously vain Gloria Von Glitz, and her horrible daughters, Rimmel and Maybelline, keep her down in the dirt where they think she belongs?

I was really hoping that the “male saviour” trope would be subverted and I’m happy to say that it was.

It was a stroke of genius by James Rushbrooke to set the story of Cinderella in the 1980s in a universe far far away, a modernisation that made the evening even more pantomime than a traditional setting
