Treasure Island (2023)

Synopsis

This riotous, pantomime-style musical reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic follows young Jim Hawkins, who dreams of a life of adventure beyond the dreary confines of the "Admiral Benbow" inn. His wish is granted when a dying pirate, Billy Bones, leaves behind a legendary treasure map, setting off a chaotic race to find the bounty.

Jim, the inn's pragmatic owner Peggy Legge, and the pompous Squire Trelawny commission a ship to claim the treasure. Unbeknownst to them, their crew is largely composed of pirates in disguise, led by the cunning and charismatic Long John Silver, who plans a mutiny to seize the treasure for himself.

The voyage becomes a swashbuckling comedy of errors, filled with stowaways (including Peggy and Squire Trelawny's headstrong daughter, Holly, disguised as a doctor), a rum-soaked parrot who is actually Peggy's ten-year-old daughter, and a shipwreck that lands them all on the fabled Treasure Island.

There, alliances are tested and secrets are revealed. Jim must navigate double-crosses, confront the mythical sea monster Ziggy Starfish (aka Davy Jones), and ultimately discover that the greatest treasures aren't gold and jewels, but the family you choose and the love you find along the way.

Packed with witty dialogue, hilarious musical numbers, and a heartwarming message, this adventure proves that sometimes you have to travel to the ends of the earth to realize what you were looking for was right at home all along.

When he begins misquoting lines from The League of Gentlemen, “this is a local pub for local people, there’s nothing for you here!”, it becomes clear that Rushbrooke is sampling a very broad range of material indeed.
